German Language Levels
To study in Germany and manage the day-to-day life in Germany, students need to learn the German language up to a C1 level. What does that mean exactly?
The language skills of a learner are reflected in a standardized level system. This level system is called the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) which is set by the European Council and makes language learning transparent by splitting the language skills in 6 different levels, determining the contents of each level, how many lessons are needed in average to reach one level and the equivalent certificate to proof a learner has reached this level.
Description of the reference level
Level needed in Germany for:
Public university entry
The CEFR also specifies the duration of language learning and regulates that a student will need between 900 and 1200 lessons (45 minutes) to reach from beginners level (0) to C1 level. In ISL we teach 30 lessons per week and 6 weeks per level, so that every level has 180 lessons (45 minutes). In total that means 6 levels with 180 lessons each, summing up to 1080 lessons and around 9 months in total.
A foreign student must show the German University that they have the German language knowledge required to study at the University. Therefore every foreign student needs to pass one of the following 2 tests in order to enter a German university:
1) TestDaF (Test Deutsch alsFremdsprache / Test German as a Foreign language)
For this you will need to study for 36 weeks to reach the C1 Level and another 6 weeks to prepare for the TestDaf exam. The exam takes place 6 times per year and you should ideally take the exam in May or June, in order to get the results on time for the winter semester. The latest date for winter semester will be the July exam. Correction time is usually 6 weeks.
2) TELC C1 Hochschule (Telc C1 university) will usually also be accepted by German universities for university entrance. The exam takes place every six weeks. You should take the exam at the latest in July to get the results on time for winter semester. Correction time is usually 4 weeks.
ISL is a licensed TestDaF and Telc testing center, so you can take both tests in our school in an environment you are already used to. Both tests have a speaking, listening, reading and writing part. Please find more information on www.testdaf.de and www.telc.net.
